Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film was released, launching Pixar as a major film company and bringing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the insignia pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
