"When are you speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"So all are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words follow endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed resilience called for a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international fan base.

However the sister act will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
