The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
